Avontuur Wine and Thoroughbred Estate

Set on the southwestern slopes of the Helderberg Mountains you will find this jewel of an estate, Avontuur Wine and Thoroughbred Estate. The estate can be found in South Africas prime wine growing district, on the R44 road between Somerset West and Stellenbosch. The estate has been owned by the Taberer family since 1984 and is open daily to visitors wanting to taste their wines or just enjoy a meal outside on the terrace whilst enjoying the view over False Bay. The wine estate consists of 100 hectares of vineyards and produces approximately 450 tons of grapes every year. 1 January 2011 saw the appointment of Jan van Rooyen as wine maker. The Estate boasts a cosy tasting room where tastings of all Avontuur wines are conducted daily.

The estate also boasts the beautiful Avontuur Stud Farm, which just like the wine farm focuses on quality and not on quantity. Their young stock is sold annually at the National Yearling Sales in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town and the Equimark sale at Spier near Cape Town during April and May.

The restaurant at Avontuur is decorated in a mix of old and new and has a warm inviting atmosphere. The terrace has spectacular views of the paddocks, vines and Table Mountain and is popular in summer. In winter a guests are comforted by a cozy fire. The emphasis at Avontuur is on unhurried meals in the company of good friends without compromising service.
The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch from Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00, and Saturdays and Sundays from 09:00 to 16:00 and dinner are served on Wednesday and Friday evenings. Booking is essential.

The restaurant is also the perfect venue for corporate events and functions, and specialises in small, intimate occasions.

Directions from Stellenbosch
Take the R44 road towards Somerset West from Stellenbosch. Go straight for about 15km and you will find Avontuur Wine Estate on your left just after Eikendal Vineyards.
Directions from N2
Take the N2 towards Somerset West. Turn left at the R44 Stellenbosch Broadway Boulevard" sign and turn left at the traffic lights onto the R44 road. Keep straight on R44 for about 7km and Avontuur Wine Estate will be on your right.
