Framed by sandstone cliffs and the foothills of the Maloti Mountains, Clarens is one of the Free State’s most appealing small towns. Its picturesque setting, village atmosphere and lively collection of galleries, cafés and restaurants have earned it a reputation as an artistic and outdoor getaway.
Founded in 1912 and named after the Swiss town of Clarens, the settlement has retained much of its early character, with sandstone buildings and tree-lined streets adding to its charm.
