THE ROSE HOUSE

The Rose House is situated on a 580 hectare farm between Fouriesburg and
Clarens on the S 325 road. The sandstone house was built in 1923 and has
recently been lovingly restored. Two guest cottages were built in the garden :
each cottage has a bedroom with two single beds, a sitting room with fireplace
(wood provided) and a large bathroom with bath and shower. In winter there are
duvets, electric blankets and hot water bottles provided. Each cottage has a tea
station with kettle, small fridge and tea and coffee. The French doors lead out
onto the wooden deck. The rate includes breakfast which is served on the
verandah overlooking the rose garden and towards the mountains. Recently 1 200
Shiraz, Pinotage and Pinot Noir grape vines have been planted with the view to
making our own wine.
A three course dinner can be had by arrangement in our dining room called The
Rose Hip. Catering is done for small weddings, private parties and occasions -
anything from a Bridge Club dinner to lunch for the Bookclub Girls, Mother's Day
or just because-it-is-Sunday. In summer we grow all our own vegetables and a
great deal of the fruit that we use in The Rose Hip.
The Farm is just 15km from the Lesotho border at Caledonspoort . A visit to the
Katse Dam, part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, can be made. Angling for
yellow fish is offered in the Little Caledon River which runs through the farm.
Horse riding can be arranged: there are varying lengths of rides which can
include an overnight stop over. There are wonderful walks and hikes both on the
farm or nearby. Over 100 birds have been sighted on the Farm just within our
Pentad with both common and rare birds being recorded.
Fouriesburg holds the annual Fouriesburg Spring Fair towards the end of September,
Ficksburg, just 45km away, celebrates the Cherry Festival in November and
Clarens, 35km away, is the art centre of the Free State with nearly 20 art
galleries to browse.
