The picturesque village of Bulwer is towered over by the mighty Magwaqa Mountain, which means "frowning one" in Zulu. Bulwer is the centre of a large forestry industry, with the tourism industry a close second.
The slopes of the Magwaqa Mountain are rated as one of the best paragliding and hang-gliding sites in South Africa. Wild Sky Adventures, offers para-gliding, while Ride the Wind - Kwela uMoya runs a Hang-gliding School. Both companies offer visitors the opportunity for tandem flights with qualified professionals, as well as and fully accredited training courses, and a variety of equipment on sale.
Bulwer is also home of the Yellowwood Church, built in 1885 along the old Wagon Road which was the main road from Pietermaritzburg to Himeville. The church is built entirely of hand sawn Yellowwood, with a corrugated iron roof. Church services still take place on the first Sunday of the month - all visitors are welcome.
For nature enthusiasts there is the nearby Impendle Nature Reserve with it's deep gorges, waterfalls, rocky pools, and peaceful forest. Various species of lilies, irises and orchids can be seen on the rocky hills and grasslands, as well as along the banks of the stream. There are also nine small perennial earth dams and a number of springs in the reserve.
Since snow can occur in Bulwer throughout the year it is advisable to pack some warm winter woollies, "just in case". Charming country accommodation is available both in the village and the surrounding area.
Activities in and around Bulwer:
- Abseiling
- Mountain biking
- Tubing, rafting and kayaking
- Bird watching
- Horse riding
