The Zulu Hut, Inkunzi Cave and Didley Squat
Situated in the foothills of the Central Drakensberg mountains, in the beautiful Champagne Valley, are the totally unique Zulu Hut and Inkunzi Cave. Rock finish inside and out, with rock paintings and carvings on the walls guarantee you an all African experience. To complete this African experience, we now have our very special Squatter Shack called Diddly Squat !
Relax with sundowners in the attached rock pools as you take in the stunning views of Champagne Castle and Cathkin Peak. Tar roads lead all the way to this private estate in one of the safest parts of the country.
is built and decorated as a genuine San cave. It sleeps 1- 2 couples comfortably. The bedroom has a stunning rock bath and toilet en suite. The lounge/kitchen area has a comfortable double sleeper couch and its own toilet and rock shower. Glass doors open on to a large rock swimming pool. Bushman carvings and etchings on the walls, as well as amazing views, provide a truly spiritual experience.
The Zulu Hut
has a traditional Zulu theme and is ideal for 1-2 couples or a family of 4. It has a separate bedroom with double bed, and a single bed suspended from the roof above the sleeper couch in the lounge/kitchen area. Peep at the mountain through a crack in the rock whilst enjoying a hot shower or relax on your bed and watch the changing moods of Champagne Castle and Cathkin Peak.
is our newest unit, decorated in true “squatter” style. Situated in a private corner of the property, Diddly Squat has a double bed in a bed-sit type dwelling, with en suite shower and toilet. Keep warm with amazing old wood stove, or lie on the bed and look out at the mountain. It sleeps only 2 people. No children allowed. Contact us for more details.
All 3 units are fully equipped for self-catering.
Full DSTV is provided in the Cave and in the Hut.

NB !! If you’re using co-ords, do not ask for shortest route !
From Durban ( only 2.5 hours !)
Travel along N3 through Mooi River toll .
Pass Estcourt turnoffs.
Pass Shell Ultra City and take the exit 194 (Bergville, Colenso, R74) glide off.
Turn left (Bergville sign) and proceed for 20km to Winterton.
1km through the town, turn left opposite the Engen garage, onto the R600
Central Drakensberg road.
***proceed for +-13 km to the crossroads at Thokozisa.
Continue straight for +- 17km. You’ll pass THE Nest, Champagne Sports Resort, Cedarwood shopping centre on right, Drakensberg Sun turnoff,
Dragon Peaks and Drakensberg Boys Choir School on right (big green thatched entrance).
About 300m that is a little school (Saverite sign).
100m after that you’ll see a rockery with a sign “Highlands” on your right.
Phone 082 4222846 or 0826138328 when you get to the electric gates and one of us
will let you in. Where driveway splits turn right to no 8.
You’ll see the Zulu Hut in the garden right near the gate.
One of us will be there to show you down to the cave.
From Johannesburg ( only 4.5 hours! )
Travel through Van Reenen’s Pass on the N3 through the Tugela toll plaza. Take
the first glide off after the toll plaza, which is at the bottom of Van Reenen’s
Turn left for +-4 km on the N11 and then turn right towards Winterton. You will
cross the N3 highway. At the t-junction (R74), turn left towards Winterton.
As you enter Winterton, opposite the Engen garage, turn right onto the
Central Drakensberg road.
Proceed as **** above.
The alternative route is over Oliviershoek Pass (more scenic).
At Harrismith turn right onto N5 for +-5km. Turn left onto
Bergville road. Left again on Bergville, Oliviershoek Pass, through
and on to Winterton. As you enter Winterton, turn right opposite
Engen garage on
R600 Central Drakensberg road. Proceed as *** above.
