Waterkloof

The Pretoria suburb of Waterkloof is situated just to the south-east of the Pretoria CBD. Waterkloof is less than ten minutes drive from the centre of Pretoria, and is thus handy for all of the attractions that the CBD offers. Waterkloof is also home to the Pretoria Country Club through which runs the Waterkloof Spruit. On the southern boundary of the suburb is the Waterkloof Air Force Base, and only a few blocks away is the Loftus Sports Stadium. Just to the West lies the Fountain Valley Recreation Area.

Pretoria was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, a leader of the Voortrekkers, who named it after his father Andries Pretorius. During the First Boer War, the city was besieged by Republican forces in December 1880 and March 1881. The peace treaty, which ended the war, was signed in Pretoria on 3rd August 1881 at the Pretoria Convention. Pretoria achieved official city status in 1931.
