Tulbagh

Only 120 km from Cape Town, Tulbagh lies in a gorgeous, fertile valley, surrounded by mountains - the Obiqua Mountains to the west, the Winterhoek to the north and Witzenberg to the east. Proteas and herbs such as Buchu grow wild and the productive Tulbagh valley produces some of South Africa's best wines, olive oil, peaches, pears and 70% of the country's plums.

Tulbagh was developed in 1743 but after an earthquake in 1969 every home in the now famous Church Street had to be restored. Today 32 of these buildings are National Monuments - the largest concentration of monuments in one street in the country.

The Tulbagh Co-operative Winery lies just outside of Tulbagh and has produced wines since 1906. It lies in the picturesque hamlet of Drostdy and boasts about 16 wineries, some of them relative newcomers. Other activities in the area include hiking, mountain bike routes, horse riding and fishing.
