Tsumeb is a characterful town in northern Namibia, known for its mining heritage, tree-lined streets and surprisingly rich collection of historical and natural attractions. Set among greener landscapes than much of the country, it provides a pleasant contrast to the dry scenery associated with Namibia and makes an excellent base for exploring the northern interior.
The origin of the name Tsumeb is uncertain, although it is thought to derive from a local Khoekhoegowab expression associated with the area’s unusual mineral-rich ground. The discovery of copper and other minerals transformed the settlement during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with mining becoming the foundation of its development.
The Tsumeb Mine is central to the town’s history. Its extraordinarily varied mineral deposits attracted international attention, and Tsumeb minerals remain highly regarded by collectors. The town's mining story can be explored at the Tsumeb Museum, which contains displays relating to local geology, history and the region's communities.
Another notable attraction is the nearby Otjikoto Lake, a remarkably deep, water-filled sinkhole that became associated with the retreating German forces during the First World War. Today, its unusual geological setting and vivid blue-green water make it an intriguing stop for visitors.
Tsumeb is also a convenient gateway to Etosha National Park, with its abundant wildlife and famous waterholes lying within relatively easy reach. The surrounding countryside supports a variety of birdlife and game, while the town itself has cafés, shops and shady streets that invite a leisurely exploration.
Tsumeb is actually in the Oshikoto Region, rather than the Oshana Region. The name Oshikoto refers to the region’s numerous sinkholes and depressions, including the spectacular Otjikoto and nearby Guinas Lake.
For travellers exploring northern Namibia, Tsumeb offers an appealing mixture of mining history, geology, wildlife and small-town charm. Its unusual mineral heritage and proximity to Etosha make it one of the most interesting stops on the northern route.
