Touws River

Touws River is a small railway town situated between Worcester and Laingsburg in the Cape Winelands region of the Western Cape. Located on the edge of the Great Karoo, it offers travellers a fascinating blend of history, wide-open landscapes and authentic country charm. Surrounded by rugged mountains, dry plains and dramatic Karoo scenery, the town provides a peaceful stopover for those exploring one of the province’s most scenic routes.

Established during the expansion of the railway network in the late 19th century, Touws River developed as an important transport and service point between Cape Town and the interior. Today, remnants of its railway heritage remain part of the town’s character, while its surrounding landscapes showcase the stark beauty of the Karoo.

Visitors can enjoy scenic drives through the surrounding countryside, stargazing beneath some of the clearest skies in the Western Cape, and exploring nearby natural attractions. The area is also known for renewable energy developments, including large solar projects that reflect its abundant sunshine and open spaces.

Although small, Touws River offers a genuine taste of rural South Africa, with friendly hospitality, fascinating history and breathtaking landscapes that make it a rewarding stop on a journey through the Cape interior.
