Established in the early 1950s to provide housing and facilities for SASOL (South African Coal, Oil & Gas) employees, Sasolburg is far more than that today. Although SASOL and a number of other major companies have made it their home and are a major part of the Sasolburgs populations lives, there is more to this town than just industry.
Awarded the administrator's Trophy for the most beautiful Large Town in the Free State several times, it stands out head and shoulders above the rest. When the town was established, thought was given to its environmental impact and Oak trees in particular were planted to help make Sasolburg a green town, today the town boasts almost 12000 oak trees. In the early 1990s Sasolburg was also awarded Arbor Town of South Africa for its role in the promotion and preservation of trees in and around the town.
President Brand Road is home to a 6Ha Highveld Garden which was established to preserve the natural vegetation of the highveld region. The Garden houses a variety of indigenous Highveld plants and is flanked by a bird sanctuary with over 70 different species of bird. Sasolburg is also close to the Vaal dam which is a major destination for water sport lovers, from windsurfing to sailing, jet skiing to fishing, or even just a family braai (barbeque).
For the culture seeker, Sasolburg is also home to the Ettienne Rousseau Theatre which plays host to Afrikaans theatrical productions as well as other performances throughout the year.
The area lies at an altitude of approximately 1500 meters above sea level. The average rainfall is over 630 mm per annum, while the average maximum summer temperature is 27 degrees Celsius and the average minimum winter temperature is 1,6 degrees Celsius.
Sasolburg is reached by the R59 from Vereeniging and the OR Thambo Johannesburg International Airport is a mere 100km from Sasolburg. Johannesburg lies 80 km to the north of Sasolburg on the N1.
