Reddersburg Accommodation

Reddersburg is a small Free State town where wide streets, open horizons and a strong sense of history reflect the character of South Africa’s central interior. Situated south of Bloemfontein, it makes a rewarding stop for travellers exploring the quieter landscapes and historic settlements beyond the provincial capital.

The town was established in the 1860s and takes its name from the Dutch Reformed minister Jacobus Uys Redders, who served in the area. Like many settlements across the Free State, its story is closely tied to the region’s farming communities and the political upheavals that shaped the province during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Reddersburg is perhaps best known for its connection to the Anglo-Boer War. In April 1900, the Battle of Reddersburg took place nearby, when a British force was surrounded and defeated by Boer commandos. The engagement formed part of the wider conflict that swept across the Free State following the British occupation of Bloemfontein. Today, the surrounding countryside offers a chance to appreciate the terrain over which these military campaigns unfolded.

The town itself is compact and best explored at an unhurried pace, with its historic church and older buildings providing glimpses of its past. Visitors can also use Reddersburg as a base for scenic drives through the surrounding farming country, particularly when the grasslands are green after summer rains.
