Namutoni Accommodation

Namutoni is a historic rest camp on the eastern edge of the Etosha Pan, surrounded by open grassland, mopane woodland and the distinctive wildlife-rich landscape of northern Namibia. Its combination of an atmospheric old fort, nearby waterholes and easy access to Etosha National Park makes it one of the most memorable places to stay while exploring the park.

The name Namutoni is generally associated with an Oshiwambo word meaning ‘an elevated place’, an apt description of the slightly raised ground on which the settlement and its famous fort stand. The area was also historically known by indigenous names, including Amutuni lyOmanenge, reflecting a much older human connection with the landscape.

Fort Namutoni is the centrepiece. Originally established as a German military and veterinary post, the fort was destroyed during an attack by Ovambo forces led by King Nehale lyaMpingana in 1904. It was subsequently rebuilt and eventually became part of the tourist infrastructure of Etosha. Today, its white walls and towers provide a striking landmark against the surrounding bushveld.

Wildlife is, naturally, the other great attraction. The nearby King Nehale waterhole can draw elephants, giraffes, zebra, antelope and other animals, particularly during the dry season when water becomes scarce. Early morning and late afternoon game drives offer some of the best opportunities for sightings, while the vast Etosha Pan provides spectacular scenery and exceptional birdwatching when seasonal rains bring water to parts of the pan.

Namutoni lies in the Oshikoto Region, whose name refers to the numerous sinkholes and geological depressions found in the area. The region's landscape provides a fascinating combination of wildlife habitat, mineral-rich geology and vast open spaces.

For travellers, Namutoni offers far more than a convenient overnight stop. The historic fort, wildlife-filled waterholes and immense Etosha landscape combine to create an experience where Namibia's natural and human history can be appreciated side by side.
