Mahango Accommodation

Mahango is a beautiful riverine area on the western edge of the Okavango River, where papyrus-lined channels, floodplains and woodland create a remarkably green corner of Namibia. The contrast with the country’s arid landscapes makes it a particularly rewarding destination for wildlife enthusiasts and travellers looking for a quieter wilderness experience.

The name Mahango is associated with the local Hambukushu people, who settled in the area around 1800. Mahango was traditionally an important hunting and fishing area for the community before being proclaimed a protected area. It became a game park in 1988 and was later incorporated into Bwabwata National Park, where it now forms the Mahango Core Area.

A game drive is one of the best ways to explore the area. The combination of riverfront, floodplain and woodland habitats supports an impressive variety of wildlife, including elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, sable, roan and numerous antelope species. Birdwatching is equally rewarding, with water-associated species particularly plentiful around the river and wetlands.

The Okavango itself provides another way to experience Mahango. Fishing excursions are popular, especially for tigerfish, while boat trips offer the chance to glide through quiet channels and observe wildlife from the water. The dry season, generally from June to October, can be particularly rewarding for game viewing as animals concentrate around the remaining water.

Mahango lies in the Kavango Region, where the Okavango River provides a vital lifeline for both wildlife and local communities. The wider area also has a rich cultural heritage, with traditional fishing, farming and crafts continuing to form an important part of everyday life.

For travellers, Mahango offers an appealing blend of wildlife, waterways and wilderness. Giant baobabs, wild palms and open floodplains add to the scenery, while the peaceful riverbanks provide an ideal setting for photography and simply enjoying one of Namibia’s greener and less familiar landscapes.
