The Battle of Magersfontein was fought on 11 December 1899 as British forces attempted to advance towards Kimberley, which was under siege. Boer troops occupied carefully prepared positions among the rocky hills, and the British suffered heavy casualties in a surprise attack before dawn. The battle became one of the best-known British defeats of the war and demonstrated the effectiveness of entrenched riflemen against advancing infantry.
