Madikwe Game Reserve is a spectacular wildlife destination in the north-western corner of South Africa, stretching across a vast landscape of open plains, rocky hills, bushveld and seasonal watercourses. Established in 1991 on land that had previously been used largely for cattle and crop farming, Madikwe became the setting for one of South Africa's largest wildlife translocation projects. Thousands of animals were moved into the reserve, helping restore an ecosystem that had been heavily altered by agriculture. Today, it is home to the celebrated Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros - along with cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, zebra and numerous antelope species.

Game drives are the main attraction, with early-morning and late-afternoon excursions offering the best opportunities for wildlife encounters. Guided bush walks provide a more intimate way to experience the reserve, focusing on tracks, plants, insects and smaller creatures that can easily be missed from a vehicle.

The reserve's varied habitats also make it a rewarding destination for birdwatchers, with hundreds of bird species recorded. Luxury lodges and private camps provide comfortable bases from which to enjoy the wilderness, often with excellent views over waterholes and open plains.
