Lephalale - Ellisras

Lephalale used to be known as Ellisras. Lephalale is situated 64 km south of the Botswana border, making it an ideal overnight location for cross-border travel. This is a malaria free area.

Lephalale is also known for its mining. It has one of the largest open-grove coalmines, called Grootgeluk, in the world. The coal provides fuel for Matimba, one of the biggest air-cooled electricity powerplants in the world.

There are several private game reserves in the Lephalale area. Accommodation in the form of self-catering thatched chalets and wood cabins are available. Wildlife is abundant in the Lephalale area and visitors are likely to see most of the big five.

Activities in the Lephalale area include bird and animal watching from well-concealed hides, game drives in open vehicles, bush-picnics, guided walks and many more.

Facilities include outdoor pools, air conditioned conference facilities, fully equipped kitchens and outdoor braai/barbeque areas. There is some rock art close by and it is well worth a visit.
