Koffiefontein

Koffiefontein is a small historic town in the southern Free State, surrounded by open grassland and farmland along the Riet River. Its unusual name and fascinating history make it an interesting stop for travellers exploring the province’s quieter rural routes.

The town’s name is thought to have originated during the nineteenth century, when travellers and prospectors stopped at a spring or fountain in the area to make coffee, giving rise to the Afrikaans name meaning ‘coffee fountain’. Koffiefontein later developed as an agricultural settlement before becoming associated with diamond mining. Diamonds were discovered in the area in the late nineteenth century, bringing prospectors and new economic activity to the district.

Koffiefontein also has an important wartime history. During the Second World War, an internment camp was established here for Italian prisoners of war captured in North Africa. Some of the prisoners were involved in construction and other work in the area, and remnants of the camp form part of the town’s unusual heritage.

The surrounding Riet River landscape offers opportunities for fishing, birdwatching and enjoying the open countryside. Scenic drives through the surrounding farming district reveal the vast horizons and distinctive semi-arid scenery of the southern Free State, while the town itself can be explored at an unhurried pace.

Situated in the Transgariep & Goldfields Region, Koffiefontein offers a fascinating mixture of mining, agricultural and wartime history. It is a rewarding destination for travellers interested in places where seemingly ordinary country towns conceal layers of South Africa’s past, from diamond prospecting to the unexpected story of Italian prisoners of war in the Free State.
