Hoachanas Accommodation

Hoachanas is a small but historically important settlement in southern Namibia, set amid the dry plains and thornveld of the Kalahari region. The name Hoachanas is believed to have Nama origins, although its exact meaning is uncertain. The settlement became an important stronghold of the Red Nation, one of the Nama communities, under the leadership of Chief Jonker Afrikaner during the 19th century. Hoachanas is particularly remembered for the peace treaty concluded here in 1858, when several Nama groups agreed to work together and recognise a common leadership. The agreement is regarded as an important milestone in the political history of the Nama people.

History is the main reason to visit. The old church and mission buildings provide reminders of the settlement’s long association with Christian missionaries, while local traditions and stories offer an insight into the lives of the Nama communities who have lived in this region for generations. The surrounding landscape is equally characteristic of southern Namibia. Hoachanas lies in the Hardap Region, north-east of Mariental and close to the edge of the Kalahari.
