Hillcrest is a residential suburb of Kimberley, set on the gently rising ground of a city whose fortunes were transformed by the discovery of diamonds in the 19th century. Although largely residential today, its position provides convenient access to Kimberley’s remarkable collection of historic attractions, while its elevated setting offers a slightly different perspective on the city and surrounding Northern Cape landscape.

The name Hillcrest is descriptive, referring to its position on higher ground or a hill crest. This enormous man-made excavation is a dramatic reminder of the diamond rush and the thousands of people who descended on the region after diamonds were discovered in 1871. The surrounding museum complex recreates elements of old Kimberley and provides insight into the lives of miners, traders and entrepreneurs who helped shape the city.

The McGregor Museum is another worthwhile stop, particularly for travellers interested in the broader story of the Northern Cape. Its collections cover archaeology, geology, natural history and local culture, placing Kimberley’s diamond story within a much older human and geological landscape.

Hillcrest also provides a useful base for exploring Kimberley’s historic architecture, parks and other suburbs. Beyond the city, the surrounding veld opens into the dry grasslands and broad horizons characteristic of the region, with excellent opportunities for photography at sunrise and sunset.

Hillcrest lies within the Kalahari & Diamond Fields Region, an area where mining, transport and agriculture have all influenced settlement patterns. For travellers, its greatest advantage is its location: a peaceful residential corner from which to explore Kimberley’s fascinating past while remaining close to the museums, heritage sites and wide-open landscapes that define this part of the Northern Cape.
