Gochas Accommodation

Gochas is a small settlement on the edge of Namibia’s Kalahari, surrounded by rolling red dunes, dry riverbeds and thorny bushveld. Far removed from the country’s larger towns, it offers a taste of the remote southern interior, where the landscape stretches seemingly without end and life is shaped by scarce water and an unforgiving climate.

The name Gochas is thought to have a Nama origin, although its precise meaning is not consistently recorded. The settlement developed as a rural community in an area traditionally inhabited by Nama people, and its history is closely tied to the dry country surrounding the Auob River. During the German colonial period, the region also became part of the wider network of military and administrative outposts established across southern Namibia.

Gochas is perhaps best appreciated as a gateway to the extraordinary landscapes of the Kalahari. The nearby Auob River is usually dry on the surface, but its underground water supports surprisingly rich vegetation, creating a green corridor through the otherwise arid terrain. Camel-thorn trees and grasses provide habitat for springbok, gemsbok, ostrich and other wildlife, while predators such as jackals may occasionally be seen.

The surrounding dunes are particularly beautiful around sunrise and sunset, when the low sun brings out deep shades of orange and red. Visitors staying in the area can enjoy game drives, guided nature walks and birdwatching, while the open landscape offers excellent opportunities for photography and stargazing. At night, the absence of city lights reveals an exceptionally clear southern African sky.

Gochas lies in the Hardap Region, near the border of the Kalahari and the southern Namibian interior. Its remote location means that it is not a destination for conventional sightseeing, but that is precisely its appeal. For travellers willing to venture off the main routes, Gochas offers an authentic encounter with the vastness, silence and wildlife of Namibia’s southern wilderness.
