Gezina

The Pretoria suburb of Gezina is situated just to the northwest of the city centre and just a few blocks to the North of Union Buildings. Gezina is a charming suburb of tree lined streets and adjacent to some of Pretoria's finest central shopping centers. The suburb was named after President Paul Kruger's second wife. Gezina is handy for visitors needing to visit any of Pretoria's many foreign embassies or other diplomatic missions. It is also very handy for the huge medical complex of the University of Pretoria situated in the nearby suburb of Prinshof and the adjacent National Zoological Gardens.

Pretoria itself was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, a leader of the Voortrekkers, who named it after his father Andries Pretorius. During the First Boer War, the city was besieged by Republican forces in December 1880 and March 1881. The peace treaty, which ended the war, was signed in Pretoria on 3rd August 1881 at the Pretoria Convention. Pretoria achieved official city status in 1931.
