Bokong

Bokong is a small mountain settlement in the highlands of central Lesotho, surrounded by vast grasslands, rugged valleys and some of the country’s most dramatic scenery. Remote and peaceful, it offers a taste of Lesotho at its wildest, where shepherds, hardy mountain ponies and traditional villages form part of the landscape.

The name Bokong is associated with the Sesotho word for ‘river’, reflecting the importance of waterways in this high-altitude environment. The name is particularly appropriate given the network of streams and mountain rivers that flow through the surrounding landscape, feeding larger waterways further downstream.

One of the area's most remarkable attractions is Bokong Nature Reserve, a high-altitude wilderness renowned for its sweeping views, sandstone formations and unusual alpine-like vegetation. The reserve is particularly famous for its wetlands, which provide important habitat for the rare Maloti minnow and a variety of mountain birds. Visitors can explore the area on foot, with hiking trails leading through open grasslands and along dramatic ridges.

The reserve is also an excellent place to encounter the distinctive bearded vulture, one of the most spectacular birds of prey in southern Africa. Other wildlife includes eland, grey rhebok and mountain reedbuck, while the highland scenery provides superb opportunities for photography.

Bokong lies in the Thaba-Tseka District, an area dominated by some of Lesotho’s highest mountains and deeply carved valleys. The district is closely associated with the highland water system that supplies much of the country and forms part of the wider Maloti mountain landscape.

The settlement is particularly beautiful in summer, when the mountain grasslands become lush and wildflowers add colour to the slopes. Winter brings a stark, dramatic landscape, with frost and snow possible at higher elevations.

For adventurous travellers, Bokong offers an experience centred on wilderness rather than conventional sightseeing. Its high-altitude landscapes, rare wildlife and sense of isolation make it an excellent destination for hiking, nature lovers and anyone wanting to experience Lesotho’s extraordinary mountain country.
