The history of Meerendal stretches back to 1702, when the farm was granted to Jan Meerland during the early days of the Cape Colony. Wine production began in earnest in 1714, when tens of thousands of vines were planted on the fertile slopes, laying the foundation for what would become a three-century legacy of winemaking. Over the years, the estate evolved from a wheat farm into a respected wine producer, with the Starke family playing a pivotal role in elevating its reputation in the 20th century, particularly through varietals like Pinotage and Shiraz. Today, under the stewardship of the Coertze family, Meerendal continues to honour its past while embracing a modern identity as a vibrant wine and hospitality destination.
