Cederberg Wilderness Area

The Cederberg is a vast wilderness area covering over 71,000 ha of rugged mountains, located about approximately 200 km north of Cape Town. The stark beauty of this arid landscape is best appreciated at sunset when the sandstone cliffs come alive with brilliant hues of ochre.
Eons of erosion by wind and rain have carved out curious rock formations, including famous landmarks like the Wolfberg Arch and the Maltese Cross.

Summer temperatures can soar into the 40's so hikers would be well-advised to avoid the noon day sun in during this time of year, especially as the sparse vegetation provides very little shelter.

The snow protea is just one of the many rare fynbos species that are endemic to the Cederberg Wilderness Area. Rooibos is another species of fynbos endemic to the region. This herb is processed by local farmers in Clanwillian area and sold in health throughout the world.
