Be prepared to be amazed as you enter this magnificent wonder of nature. To
enter the caves, you are required to trek down 87 stairs at a 45 degree angle,
which takes you 22 metres below the earth's surface. You then get to hop on to
an elevator, which drops you a further 18 metres into the cave.
The cave is dimly lit with a cool atmosphere and the temperature averages around 18 degrees. Whilst touring around the caves, you will come across about 14 stalactites and stalagmite formations, with the largest reaching as high as 15 metres and weighing 50 tons. Even after 5 - 10 million years, 85% of the formations in this huge limestone cavern are still growing.
Reasonable fitness is required in order to visit the caves - the stairs may be going down on the way in, but they certainly aren't on the way out. Although there is no crawling or extreme movement required during the tour, some people are left breathless (and not only because of the sheer beauty of the caves).
You will need to keep an eye out for The Praying Mary, The Kitchen and The Mushroom. These are all formations that have developed into shapes that look like certain characters - or anything else if you have a more vivid imagination.
The Wonder Cave is part of the Cradle of Humankind, which is a world heritage site and a must-see!
Don't forget to take non-slip closed shoes with you, as the cave floors can become very slippery. You can also take a torch if you wish, but the caves are lit inside. You will need a camera with a decent flash in order to take pictures of the limestone formations.
The Wonder Cave is situated at Kromdraai, within the Rhino and Lion Reserve at The Cradle of Humankind. From JHB and Pretoria the R28/N14 (Pretoria / Krugersdorp) highway. Travel for approx. 9km along the N14 till you see the sign for Kromdraai on your right. Turn right and continue for another 7km to the entrance of the Rhino and Lion Reserve.
Tours are conducted by competent guides along well-lit pathways, where no crawling is necessary, reducing the likelihood of claustrophobia.
