Originally set aside by the Zulu Kingdom as a royal hunting ground, the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve is by far the largest - and arguably the best - game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal.
The Rhino Capture Unit of the park can take credit for helping save the endangered White Rhino from the brink of extinction. Today the reserve has over 1600 white rhino in the reserve and has relocated hundreds of these magnificent animals to game reserves around the world.
The Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve supports healthy populations of all Big Five, as well as dozens of other large game, and a wide range of other smaller mammals, birds, and reptiles.
The terrain of the Hluhluwe section of the reserve primarily consists of hilly grassland, while the Umfolozi section is characterised by bushveld. Over 200 km of roads provide visitors with ample opportunity to explore the reserve and view game from the comfort (and safety) of their own vehicle. In addition to these self-guided game drives, the reserve has several hiking trails, ranging from the 30 minute Mblome Forest Trail near the Hluhluwe Hilltop camp, to the 5 day guided wilderness trails which can be booked with KZN Wildlife.
