Tsandi Royal Homestead

Tsandi Royal Homestead

There are seven traditional kingdoms with highly regarded leaders that continue to exist in northern Namibia. One of these kingdoms is Uukwaluudhi and it is led by King Shikongo Josea Taapopi. The Tsandi Royal Homestead is located about 2 km past Tsandi towards the town of Okahao in the Omusati Region of Namibia. Half of the homestead is comprised of a modern structure (where the king and his family reside), while the other half has been left in the traditional Owambo style.

With the help of the Namibia Community-Based Tourism Association (Nacobta) several young people from the area were trained as tourist guides. During a one-hour tour they take you through the former royal home and explain the royal family's traditions and history, their values and rituals. By prior arrangement groups will be served traditional dishes and entertained with dance performances. Traditional household items as well as craft items typical of the Uukwaluudhi culture are available in a small souvenir shop, as well as in-depth information about the homestead. The family is regarded by visitors as friendly, open and full of insightful information.
