Molemane Eye Nature Reserve

The Molemane Eye Nature Reserve is a relatively small nature reserve (A development project funded out of the Provincial Capital Development Fund, costing R8,3 million in 2003) in the North West province, 11 kilometres from Ottoshoop on the Lichtenburg-Zeerust Road. Its accessibility and proximity to Gauteng makes it an attractive weekend destination for nature-lovers who want a rustic experience.

The reserve which is situated just off two major local and international tourist arteries - the N4 to Gaborone and the N14 or "Kalahari Super Highway", is still being developed, with plans to convert the old farmhouse on the property into a museum. Other plans include game-stocking activities to build up the reserve's wildlife population. This game stocking includes high value game species such as rhino, buffalo, sable and eland.

The area has a rich cultural history with many old mining sites, but what the reserve is best known for is the natural well after which it is named. Half of the wells crystal clear water drives a water wheel, which in turn drives an old mill. The mill is a national monument and is still in working order. The rest of the water coming from the well feeds a dam on the reserve, where visitors can book a rustic campsite or a chalet.

Fishing is permitted on the reserve and angling for bass on a strictly catch-and-release basis is popular. No live bait may be used and only artificial lures with barbless hooks are permitted.
