eMzantsi Carnival

South Africa has a fabulous diversity of people and cultures and this is evident Cape Towns south peninsula. To showcase this, the organisers of the eMzantsi Carnival aim to bring our communities together and create a shared south peninsula identity. The word eMzantsi is actually the isiXhosa word for South and the the eMzantsi Carnival is all about celebrating life in Cape Towns south peninsula.

The Carnival is more than just a single event but rather the culmination of a year-round community-building process that encourages people of the South, especially children and youth, to cross boundaries and collaborate with each other. The Carnival, which usually takes place each year on the first Saturday of December brings over 1500 people together from all over the valley. Those involved join in the colourful parade and stageshow, which includes minstrels and marimba bands, gumboots and gospel singers, b-boys and ballet dancers.

On Saturday 3rd December 2011 the seventh eMzantsi Carnival will see more than one thousand children, performers and musicians accompanying giant recycled-art puppets. In order to get the best views of the fabulous carbon-neutral parade be at the intersection of Kommetjie Road (M65) and Ou Kaapse Weg (M6) in Sun Valley (near Noordhoek) by 10:00, and then tag along for the eMzantsis Got Talent competition onstage at the Sun Valley green, hosted by comedian Rob van Vuuren. The theme for the 2011 carnival is eMzantsi goes BOS (Afrikans for Bush), so go wild and wear green!
