Durbanville Nature Reserve
Located in the heart of Durbanville is a little 6 hectare nature reserve with an important role to play. Allthough short hiking trails, bird watching and picnicking are the main attractions of the Durbanville Nature Reserve, its primary role is to protect a rare flower - Aristea lugens - and to conserve a transition zone between the renosterveld and sandveld fynbos. Serruria bronii is another rare and endangered floral species that has been identified in the confines of the reserve.
This reserve with its wide range of indigenous plant species has attracted many birds, and has created a birdwatchers paradise. Walking trails are suited to those who prefer less strenuous activities, but who still want to take in the beautiful and famous flora of the Cape. In October the colourful spring flowers may still be seen and visitors may spot animals such as the endangered Cape rain frog, the small grey mongoose, the angulate tortoise, and various species of birds and butterflies. The reserve also features an indigenous plant nursery including rare species of Swartland shale renosterveld and Cape Flats sand fynbos vegetation types.
During weekdays the nature reserve is open from 07:30 to 16:00, and an environmental education programme is available for schools, presented by Cape for Kids. Durbanville Nature Reserve will be open to visitors on weekends between October and June, from 07:00 to 19:00.
Durbanville Nature Reserve is one of more than 30 nature reserves and natural areas managed by the City of Cape Town. Together with other natural areas in the city, it conserves Cape Town's unique biodiversity and heritage.

Directions From Cape Town
Take the N1 Highway from Cape Town for approximately 18.5 kilometre. Take exit 23 for Willie Van Schoor Avenue toward R302/Durban Road and turn left onto Willie Van Schoor Avenue. Follow Willie Van Schoor Avenue for approximately 2.0 kilometres and then onto Durbanville Avenue for a further 4.1 kilometres. Turn left onto Church Street / M13 and follow this for 1.0 kilometre Race Course Road will be on your right hand side and the reserve is opposite the race course.
