Blisters For Bread Charity Walk

Blisters For Bread Charity Walk

A charity walk is only worth it if you fully appreciate the charity and the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) was established in 1958 when the government at the time discontinued the national school feeding programme. The Rotary Club of Paarden Eiland (now Table Bay), aware of the need for school feeding, called a public meeting, at which PSFA was formed. For more than 50 years, PSFA has been providing meals to hungry children in primary, secondary and special-needs schools across the Western Province, including the distant rural areas.

One of the fund raising events that was initiated was a walk which over the years became known as Blisters for Bread. The event originally started in 1968 when staff and learners from the Savio College in Lansdowne, along with PSFA, initiated a fun walk to raise funds for PSFAs school feeding programme. Due to its success it was decided to stretch the boundaries and have a BIG walk, in which school staff and learners and the community were invited to participate. At this point, PSFA took over the responsibility and ownership of Blisters for Bread.

In 2011, Blisters for Bread will be 43 years old and is usually held on the last Sunday in August. The walk is a major event in City of Cape Town and the 2010 Blisters for Bread attracted a record number of more than 15,400 walkers. The walkers come out in support of PSFA and feeding hungry children and 2010 saw in excess of R700000.00 being raised.

The funds that are raised are are directed to the school feeding programme so that more learners can be fed. Other sponsors include Peninsula Beverages and the various Lions Clubs around Cape Town. Both organisations have been involved with Blisters since its inception, and their invaluable support has contributed to the success of Blisters.

The 2011 event starts and finishes at a new venue, the Green Point Cricket Club. You can enter the 5km, 10km or 20km walk. Entry to the event costs R30 per walker and you can enter online or download the entry form at www.psfa.org.za. You can also collect entry forms at selected Spur Steak Ranches and Virgin Active gyms in the Western Cape. Entries for individuals close on 15 August 2010 and the closing date for group entries is on 6 August 2010. Official t-shirts are also available for R50 each.

There will be parking at designated areas on the day. Note that access to the Green Point Cricket Club on the day is only permitted through Vlei Road.

The starting times for the different distances are:
