ABSA Calitzdorp Port and Wine Festival

ABSA Calitzdorp Port and Wine Festival

Described as jam-packed and a festival of happy memories, this is the event that shakes the Klein Karoo dust off Calitzdorp in preparation for the very best wine and lifestyle festival this region has to offer. The festival is held every second year with the 2011 event taking place on 16 to 18 June 2011. The historic town of Calitzdorp, which is known as the Port-Wine capital of South Africa, bursts at the seams as visitors for far and wide flood in to take advantage of all the festival has to offer. The 2011 festival, as a result of the successful 2009 festival, was again centered at the historic Calitzdorp Railway Station. But the station was not the only attraction. The event was complimented by a full and fabulous program of events at the various wine cellars and village venues.

The festival program has been expanded to a full and diverse three day event with something to suit everyone. 2011 saw the ever-popular Port Auction on offer again with the proceeds going to the Calitzdorp Fund for the Needy. The Station Barn was again open for full tasting of the Ports and Port cultivar wines of not only Calitzdorp but also the participating South African Port Producer's Association (SAPPA) members. A visit to the various cellars was also a necessity as you were offered their full range of wines, tempting your taste-buds with specialty food offerings, while you just sat back, took a load off tired feet and relaxed for a while. A new event on the festival program in 2011 was the Youth and Local Artists Expo which was held in the Calitzdorp Town Hall. The festival committee was very proud to host this community project which was aimed at showcasing existing local artists without galleries and offered opportunity for spotting and developing hidden artistic talent in the children of the community. Whilst talking about art, the Arts Meander, provided a showcase of the superb wealth of talented and established artists who exhibit their arts in galleries in and around Calitzdorp. The list went on and on and on, with events like the Port Dance that was hosted by the Calitzdorp High School, The Klein Karoo Klassiek Mountain Bike race which took place over the same weekend as the festival, and Childrens entertainment at the Calitzdorp Station, tractor rides to the various cellars, quality up market food and lifestyle stalls, coffee shops and restaurants with special Portuguese festival menus to suit everyones taste and so much more. Not forgetting the slow and relaxing end to the festival at the Long Table Brunch, a Mediterranean Portuguese style brunch under the trellised vines at the Station Ticket Office.

So in order to avoid disappointment pre-book your 2012 tickets through Computicket or book during the festival at the Calitzdorp Computicket Box Office.
