Pirates Groot Gat Marathon

The Kimberley Pirates Club hold an annual race at the end of February each year called the "Groot Gat" which translated it the "Big Hole." The three races are as follows, the "Groot Gat" (Big Hole) which is 42.2 kilometres, the "Klein Gat" (Small Hole) which is 21.1 kilometres and the "Kort Gat" (Short Hole) which is 10 kilometres. All three races run through the historical terrain of the Open Mine Museum. The marathon route also runs through the private reserve of Oranje Mynbou and Vervoer and the Cape road. This part is definitely not for sissies and is definitely a unique experience.

The starting and ending point is at the Kimberley Pirates Club in Jacobus Smithstreet. The race starts at 06:30 sharp on the Saturday morning, with registrations starting at 05:00. Winners and category winners receive gold medals and all finishers receive medals too. For those who need to take it a little easier, the routes can also be walked with gold medals in this category too. The cut off times and minimum ages for the races are as follows Marathon - 5 Hours - 20 years, Half Marathon - 3 Hours - 16 years, 10km - 2 Hours - 15 years. There will also be lucky draw prizes on the day.

The race is a qualifier for runners wishing to compete in the Two Oceans and the Comrades marathons.
