Going Yellow at the foot of the Langeberg mountain!
Every year the town of Swellendam is abuzz with excitement as the streets fill up with tourists and locals alike. The Canola Carnival brings a festive atmosphere to town and is sure to entertain both young and old. The festival includes mountain bike races, marathons and other outdoor activities as well as live music by well known local and South Afican artists, food and wine stalls, live theatre and much, much more. If you are in the Swellendam area or nearby, or planning a trip to the area make sure that you dont miss the fun. The 2011 Canola Festival will be held on the 5th and 6th of August.

Outdoor activities that take place during the carnival include:
Mountain Bike Challenge
There are three routes available: 55km, 35km and 10km, and all participants can look forward to scenic, yet challenging routes through the Marloth Nature Reserve. The terrains include gravel roads, jeep tracks and roughly 4km of amazing single-track in the forest. For beginners and not so fit riders, the organisers recommend the 10km route.

The Marathon
The marathon consists of a 21.5km run and 5km Fun Run, with the 21.5km route running through the Hermitage and Marloth Park Nature Reserve and the fun run being a short picturesque walk or slow paced run to enjoy.

4 x 4 Route
The grade three classification route will take approximately four hours to finish with the route being set at the foot of the Langeberg mountains.

Other outdoor activities will include the Extreme - Provincial Championships, the Rubber Duck Boat Race in the Buffeljags Dam, and the Disability Drive with wheelchair races etc. You are also invited to just explore Marloth Park, Bontebok Park, and numerous museums in the area at your own pace.

The music line up at Canola Carnival 2011 will keep your foot tapping no matter where you are in the town. The main entertainment are will be the Music Tent which will be hosting up and coming talent as well as well known artists including Jay Bobby van Jaarsveld, Robbie Wessels, Nadine, Die Flooze, Arno Jordaan, Manie Jackson, Patrick Lindoor, Karen Ferreira and Monique. The cost of admission for the music tent as follows: A weekend pass for the Music Tent will be R80 per adult, R50 per child and pre-schoolers for free. The Street Stage in front of Seeff (Berg Street) will be host to local talents from the Swellendam area from Friday afternoon 14:00 until 18:00 and throughout Saturday (08:00 to 18:00). Some confirmed artists on the Street Stage will be the local High School Revue and the winners of the Swellies Got Talent competition. There will be no entrance fee for the Street Stage.

The 2011 Canola program is also proud to include a number of local productions in the DR Church Hall in Voortrek Street. These must see productions are:

But its not only the adlts that will be kept entertained there is also something special to ensure that the youngsters will also enjoy the carnival. There is a secure location for youngsters where you can book them in to enjoy clown and magic shows, storytelling, face painting, puppet shows, balloon modelling and much more as well as 2 items for the kids on Friday morning hosted by popular Elizabeth and Melanie.

Food & Wine Expo
2011 will see The Canola Carnivals first ever Food & Wine Expo on the lawns of the Drostdy Museum where you can make a turn and taste the local cheeses or enjoy a sip of quality wine.

What would any carnival be without stalls, and this year is said to be no different. With interesting buys like furniture, jewellery, biltong, tools, art, etc. you need to make sure you allow for excess baggage on your trip home as well as the special memories that you will keep for years to come about your trip to the Canola Carnival in Swellendam.
