Set in the heart of the Great Karoo lies a the small sheep-farming town of Richmond, home to the Ratelfontein Game Reserve. Ratelfontein is a 13000 hectare game reserve which supports over two thousand head of both indigenous and exotic game. Some of these include rarer species such as the Arabian Oryx, Scimitar-Horned Oryx, Red Lechwe, Indian Black Buck, Sable and the Roan Antelope. The reserve management believe in the preservation of wildlife and the protection of endangered species through the practice of sustainable hunting. There is a resident professional hunter at the reserve to design a hunt specifically for you, taking into account your skill level and endurance as a hunter. The town of Richmond was first established in 1843 and is found in one of the highest and coldest parts of the Karoo, and sometimes receives only 400mm of rain per year. Some of the activities available at Ratelfontein Game Reserve include Bird Watching, Horse Riding, Hiking, Clay Pigeon Shooting and Hunting.

The reserve is home to a wide variety of bird life. The heaviest flying bird in the world, the Cory Bustard, the swift Peregrine Falcon and the majestic Black Eagle are some of the unique birds which can be found in the reserve.
