Akkerendam Nature Reserve

Akkerendam Nature Reserve

Established in 1967 approximately 4 kilometres North of Calvinia in the Hantam Municipality the Akkerendam Nature Reserve is almost dominated by the majestic Hantam Mountain. The reserve, which is operated by the municipality, has been declared a protected area and is 2750 hectares in size. Some of the flora and fauna on display in the reserve include Sterboom (Cliffortia Arborea), Sword lilies, Cape Asters, and Brown peppering plants. Sterboom which is found here in its natural environment is currently on the IUCN Red List of threatened species and the main factor which led to this was the fact that it was the only woody plant in the area, and was heavily used for firewood. The reserve is also popular with bird watchers and is proclaimed bird sanctuary, containing more than 65 different species of birds including, the Cinnamon-breasted Warbler or Kopje Warbler, Karoo Lark, Dwarf eagle, Black Harrier, Black-headed canary, Malachite Sunbird, Layards Warbler and Fairy Flycatcher.
The reserve also has two hikes which cater for both the fit and not so fit which cross the Hantam Mountain, giving you the opportunity to take in magnificent scenery. Open daily from sunrise to sunset, entrance to the reserve is free. It offers picnic spots for those just wanting to come, relax and rejuvenate.
