Appie van Heerden Nature Reserve

Appie van Heerden Nature Reserve

Surrounded by Karoo koppies (hills) that form part of the Karee mountains, you will find the Appie van Heerden Nature reserve. In the typical Karoo veld of the reserve a variety of the original game, that roamed the area before the sheep farmers came, can be seen. These include Ostrich, Springbuck, a large herd of Gemsbok, Black Wildebeest, Blesbok and Zebra. The reserve is also part of the Birds in Reserves Project (BIRP), and amongst others the following birds have been recorded in the reserve: the Common Ostrich, Rock Kestrel, Namaqua Sandgrouse, European Bee-eater, Large-billed Lark, Spike-heeled Lark, Barn Swallow, Mountain Wheatear, Anteating Chat, Karoo Scrub-Robin, Yellow-bellied Eremomela, Rufous-eared Warbler, Chat Flycatcher and the White-throated Canary. Apart from the animals in the reserve, spring brings the most wonderful Karoo flower displays.

Entrance into the reserve is free but the gate is only open on Sundays, for entrance any other day you will need to contact the officer in charge of the reserve to open the gate. You will find the 860 hectare reserve on the road between Carnarvon and Loxton.
