Franschhoek Bastille Festival

Franschhoek Bastille Festival

The Franschhoek Valleys centuries old French Huguenot heritage is celebrated once a year at the Bastille Festival. Over the years the valley has been linked with the persuit of freedom since the early days of the Cape. It was one of the destinations that the French Huguenots fled to, to escape religious persecution in France. Locally, the struggle for freedom is highlighted at the Victor Verster prison (now known as the Drakenstein Prison) which saw the release of Nelson Mandela on 11 February 1990. What better place to experience A Celebration of Freedom than Franschhoek.

Known throughout the world for its fine cuisine, the celebration would not be the same without food making an appearance. The Food and Wine Marquee is open daily from midday until 17:00, and is always the main draw card for people, where fine wine can be sampled from some of the local wine estates and experience some of the delicious dishes created by the Valleys award winning chefs. With cuisine, ranging from: oysters, sushi, local and French cheeses to charcuterie, hand-made chocolates and salmon trout from the area you had better come with a health appetite. Franschhoeks restaurants also offer special menus which have exclusively prepared for the Bastille Festival.

Included in the line up at the festival are: the Franschhoek minstrel parade, a barrel rolling contest and a waiters' race. The farmers market, French corner market make for relaxing shopping and musicians and children's activities are also included in the celebrations. Le Quartier Francais will be hosting a screening room screening movies throughout the weekend for those wanting to appreciate the French heritage in comfort.

There is something for everyone at the celebrations, both young and old will be entertained. Make your way to Franschhoek during July and celebrate at the Franschhoek Bastille Festival!
