The Jewish Pioneer's Memorial Museum in Port Elizabeth is housed in the
original Raleigh Street Synagogue, in Raleigh Street, central Port Elizabeth.
The old building which was used by the city's Jewish community between 1912 and
1954, was designed by leading architect of that time, Orlando Middleton and was
built by Kohler Brothers. The Synagogue was consecrated on 12th December 1912 by
Rabbi JL Landau of Johannesburg. The design displays a dominant art noveau
style, with turrets and keyhole windows, showing Byzantine influence. The
exquisite Hebrew lettering are the words of Jacob, when he arose from his dream:
"Surely this is the House of God and these are the gates of Heaven".
The historic Western Road Synagogue, which was the second oldest synagogue in South Africa, was sold and demolished, and a group of concerned congregants felt that the Raleigh Road Synagogue should not meet the same fate. They formed "The Synagogue and Youth Foundation" and bought the building. A short while later, the Department of Architecture at the University of Port Elizabeth showed a keen interest in the Art Noveau building, and with their help the it was declared a National Monument in 1986 and the Museum was born. The Jewish Pioneer's Memorial Museum features an interesting collection of memorabilia, ceremonial items and historical photographic displays, such as a bridal gallery and Jewish ex-servicemen's memorial. The museum is open to the public between 10am and noon every Sunday, except on Jewish holy days.
