The Old Station Building in Durban is one of only few remaining examples of
Victorian style railway stations in South Africa. Construction of the station
was completed in 1892, but there was much confusion, the result of a mistake by
the architects in London who had mistakenly switched the roof plans with those
for the station in Toronto, Canada. The roof of the old station is capable of
supporting more than five meters of snow, however the Toronto station's roof
collapsed during the first winter.
Today the building is the home of the KZN tourist information bureau, known as "Tourist Junction" and is the point of departure for various walking tours around the city of Durban, which include the Historical Walkabout and the Oriental Walkabout. The Old station building is also the location of the African Art Centre which showcases a variety of local art including weaving, embroidery, sculpture, ceramics, and various forms of beadwork.
A bust of Mohatma Gandhi can be found just inside the front door, commemorating the purchase of a first class train ticket to Johannesburg in June 1893. On route to Pietermaritzburg someone on the train complained that there was a non white passenger in the first class compartment and he was forcibly removed from the train upon arrival at Pietermaritzburg. He had been separated from his luggage and was forced to spend an extremely cold night in a shed. It is said that this is where Ghandi's philosophies on passive resistance or Satyagraha originated.
