Sandveld Nature Reserve

The Sandveld Nature Reserve is located on the Orange Free State shoreline of the Bloemhof Dam. The dam is well known amongst birders for it's healthy populations of many aquatic birds including the Cape Shoveller, Cape Teal, and White-faced Duck to name a few. Other birds that have been recorded are the rare Pygmy Falcon and the Great Crested Grebe. Fish eagle and the martial eagle are also frequently spotted.

The reserve also boasts a large variety of antelope, including springbok, gemsbok, red hartebeest, blue wildebeest, giraffe and eland, as well as other large herbivores such as rhino and giraffe.

With a capacity of over 1.2 billion cubic metres, it's not surprising the Bloemhof dam is one of the best freshwater fishing fishing dams in the country. During the summer the dam is favourite place for all types of watersports.
