Sand River Conservancy lies in the foothills of the Bontberg mountains about 230km from Cape Town on the edge of the Tankwa Karoo and covers 5000 hectares of vegetation ranging from mountain grasses to succulent Karoo veld along the forgotten trail used by diamond prospectors on their way to Kimberly in days gone by. The land was previously used as winter grazing for sheep but is now managed as a private conservation area with the aim of rehabilitating the veld and encouraging the indigenous animals. Larger antelope like eland and gemsbok are now often seen here, as well as the smaller klipspringers and steenbok.

Sand River Conservatory offers self catering accommodation in two very distinct houses, Sandkop which is very modern and luxurious, and the Wagon House (see our other listing) which is old, rustic and more basic .

SRC is remote and very private, the perfect place to escape from the stress of the modern world, or just to enjoy the company of friends or family with you. However, both Sandkop and the Wagon House have free wifi for those who need to keep connected. When staying at SRC a high clearance vehicle is advised as the road is not suitable for the average sedan car.

Sandkop House

Sandkop is a newly built sustainable house with the idea of minimizing its carbon footprint, as far as possible materials have been sourced from local businesses.

Electricity is supplied by solar panels and a backup generator. All hot water is supplied by a gas geyser. Guests are required to separate their rubbish for us to recycle.

The result is a very comfortable house with all modcons and stunning views from a large covered verandah. Choice of two braai places at the side of the house. Also cool off or warm up in the hot tub under the sun or stars.

There is a fully equipped open plan kitchen/living area, 3 ensuite bedrooms (toilet, shower, basin) 1 queen, optional setup in second bedroom of twin beds or king size bed, and a bunk bed room. A total of 6 people can be accommodated.

Facilities include free wifi, electric lights, fridge/freezer and an extra chest freezer available on request, gas stove with oven, microwave, toaster, washing machine, TV (guests can play dvd or cd’s but there is no signal to receive tv).

All bedding, towels and firewood are provided. Bring your own food and drinks.

Bird watching and veld walks are also popular. Guests are welcome to bring bicycles to tour the farm tracks but cross country cycling is not permitted.

The Karoo is known for its clear dark skies at night making ideal star gazing conditions. We offer two star gazing circles for your use, these are circular shoulder - high structures to afford protection from any wind whilst still having a clear view of the sky as there is no roof, and a level concrete floor on which are reclining chairs to comfortably view the heavens using your binoculars or telescope if you have brought them.

SRC can be your base whilst you visit other attractions in the local area like private game reserves eg Sodawa,Inverdoorn, Aquila; historical Matjiesfontein; adrenalin sports eg zip slide, Matroosberg; make a visit to the famous Tankwa padstal/bar; cherry picking at Klondyke;snow viewing etc.

All bedding, towels and firewood provided, bring your own food and drinks, bearing in mind that the nearest towns to SRC for supplies are Ceres and Touws River which are both 80km away.

Whether you approach from Ceres or from the N1 on the R46 you will enter into the karoo through Karoopoort passing by a long row of fig trees next to the R355 road, then taking the first right onto the R354 Sutherland road, after 7.7km again turn right onto the Patatsrivier road taking careful note of odometer reading, after 16.7km the entrance to SRC is on your right on a rising road marked by two stone cairns and a small SRC sign above the gate.
