Ottosdal

Ottosdal is situated east of Potchefstroom and south of Lichtenburg in the North West Province. It is the only place in South Africa where Pyrophylite, a kind of metamorphosed clay, is mined. Pyrophylite has a variety of uses, but it is most commonly called either "Wonderstone" or "African Stone" and is used for sculpting. Some of the interesting sites in and around Ottosdal include trenches, cemeteries and British forts dating to Second Boer War, which are located on the farms Driekuil and Gestoptefontein. In the "Garden of Remembrance" you will find some of the graves of soldiers killed during the Second Boer War.

Khoisan Rock Engravings can be seen on some of the local farms. This rock art included petrographs showing game such as rhino, elephant, lions, buffalo, baboons and giraffes. The animals depicted once roamed in abundance in the area many years ago.
