Kampersrus

Kampersrus is situated on the foothills of Mariepskop, in Limpopo Province, where the battle of the Bapedi people took place . The town came into being long after the wars on the farm Bedford which was owned by Mr Mare who parted with his land to establish a town and school for the surrounding area. The town later became Kampersrus and the school is still named Mariepskop. Kampersrus is the ideal base to visit the greater Kruger to Canyon biosphere reserve and the panorama. The biosphere area includes parts of the Kruger National Park, the Underberg area of Mpumalanga and the Drakensburg Mountain Range. The town is flanked by Moholoholo Mountain reserve on the one side and by Moholoholo Forest Camp and Rehabilitation centre on the other. Mariepskop forms the backdrop to the town from all angles. Mariepskop is a nature reserve and is the same height as Table Mountain with similar fauna and flora. The Samango monkeys roam the forest of the mountain slopes in town and up to the mountain. The Mariepskop emperor butterfly is another inhabitant of the forests and exists only here. A large variety of endangered animals inhibit these parts of the mountain range and that is why Kampersrus is included in the Kruger to Canyon biosphere. The town boasts numerous businesses including various restaurants, bush pub, filling station, general store, post office and bottle store, ice cream shop to name but a few. Hoedspruit is the nearest town 29 kms away and there one can get almost anything. One of the spectacular sights to see is at the Blyde River Dam and is the Kadishi waterfall, which is one of the few tufa waterfalls in the world. This is unique in that it is built up by fossilized rock and does not erode as other waterfalls do. This is seen best on the boat ride on the Blyde Dam which lies in the Blyde Canyon and is the third largest canyon in the world.
