We recently stayed at this charming holiday rental and it was the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The cottage was cozy and comfortable, with everything I needed for a relaxing stay. The views were simply breathtaking, and I loved spending my mornings sipping coffee on the porch while taking in the stunning scenery.

One of the highlights of my stay was the hospitality of the hosts. They were warm, welcoming, and went above and beyond to make sure that my stay was enjoyable. From helpful tips on local attractions to thoughtful touches in the cottage, their kindness made my stay all the more memorable.

I also loved the peacefulness of the surroundings. It was so quiet and tranquil, and the perfect place to unwind and recharge. The farm animals were adorable and added to the charm of the property, particularly the lambs near the cottage.

Overall, I would highly recommend this holiday rental to anyone looking for a peaceful and rejuvenating getaway. The combination of spectacular views, memorable hospitality, and serene surroundings make it a truly special place to stay.

Wow, what an amazing fully equipped farm/mountain cottage retreat with the best 360 mountain view, there are 3 dams stocked with bass. The owner Sylvie is an amazing person and host, Luna the Lunatic Sheppard dog looked after me both nights, I will most definitely be returning on my next trip.

What a wonderful diamond this is among a whole host of Wakkerstroom area gems! Sylvie and Minou have gone to huge effort to make this extra-special: by far the best-equipped self-catering cottage we've stayed at (we were in the two-bedroom Sunbird Cottage) made even better with a supply of farm fresh eggs, milk, and home-made jams on arrival. Supremely private and quiet. Amazing views of the gorge and mountains from the patio, main bedroom and even the large bath tub.

Birdwatchers will be spoilt as the natural vegetation in the gorge brings a lot of surprises you wouldn't usually find in the area on top of the already-special array around Wakkerstroom. Although this is a working farm, you are allowed to walk and hike anywhere. Gentle Luna the Aussie sheepdog was our constant companion on walks, having as much fun as we did. We were woken each morning by birdsong as well as livestock calls of the content and well looked after cattle, sheep and horses. Not to mention chickens, geese, running ducks, and new-born lambs calling you to take "just one more photo".

This place is Special.

We spent the weekend and did our Christmas in July Dinner at Sunbird House. It is truly an amazing spot. The view from the house over the gorge is stunning. We had Luna the dog for company the whole weekend and followed us everywhere. Sylvie was so accommodating and allowed us to watch the rugby at her house. We will definitely be back in the Summer.

We have stayed at Sunbird Cottage several times and it is always fabulous. The cottage is exceptionally well equipped, including fresh eggs, milk and homemade jam. Sylvie is the perfect host, warm and welcoming. There is plenty to occupy children on the farm and a stunning view for sundowners. We look forward to our next visit.

Sunbird Cottage was one of the best accommodations we've stayed at in a very long time. Not only was the cottage equipped with everything you would need to make your stay comfortable, but the view from the veranda was breathtaking. Our host; Sylvie had great communication and was very kind to us. We will surely be back to visit this amazing little gem!

Our stay at Sunbird Cottage in May 2019 was AMAZING to say the very least.
The well equipped cottage and the views over the gorge are spectacular, there was everything we needed and more, firewood for the fireplace and wonderful books and games provided some interesting entertainment.
Sylvie is the most amazing host, providing so many extras (eggs, jams and fresh milk), her fantastic insight and knowledge of the area, the most beautiful spots to visit etc was catered for. From the walks... the kayaking... the friendly dogs.... farm animals... the birding life as well as the fishing in the 5 dams was incredible. The attention to detail was amazing... to the extent of having some personal belongings which I left behind sent to me in JHB which Sylvie arranged meticulously. Nothing is too much trouble.

You will not miss a TV or a radio, this is a little piece of heaven that we look forward to visiting again as soon as we can. Our 3 nights flew past and we will definitely extend our stay on our return trip.
SIMPLY SPECTACULAR

Our stay at Sunbird-House in early January 2019 was soul-restoring and invigorating. The soothing, pastoral view from 2 of the bedrooms, the family-room and the formal lounge was in itself enough to make the stay worthwhile. Cooking-time was a fun bonding time for our party - because of the wonderful array of utensils packed in the various cupboards; and because of the addition of a kitchen couch for side-line cooks and advisors. Sylvie was extremely generous with little touches (farm-fresh eggs, farm milk, garden tomatoes, home-made jams, puzzles to build at night) that added to the magic of the holiday. Although she was never intrusive to our privacy she was always available when asked. She did not hesitate to show us the way to the waterfall and the birding forest written about in the welcome-information book. She also taught us about her vegetable tunnels, allowed us to watch little lambs being born and permitted interaction with the beautiful farm dogs. The house was perfectly situated for a scenic drive to the Mpumalanga “Dorp-van-die-jaar”, 2018 – namely Wakkerstroom. We will definitely be recommending this destination and returning in the not too distant future.

My husband and I visited Sunbird Cottage with our 4 year old and what an amazing stay!!! We last stayed there 7 years ago and remember why it had such a special place in our hearts. Sylvie had put out fresh eggs, milk & homemade jams from the farm for us to feast on.
There was a MOUNTAIN of wood for us to use, as well as firelighters, charcoal and all the amenities you can think of. There was plenty of bedding with a fireplace inside the lounge, a heater in the master bedroom and all the beds had warm blankets. The beds were comfortable, warm and the views are epic!
There is plenty to do on the farm and the kitchen is equipped with every single thing you might possibly need - well stocked with plates, crockery, proper wine glasses and plastic for the kids.
The bathroom has a wonderful bush view and bubble bath, shaving cream, toothbrush & toothpaste, soaps etc are amply provided in case you forgot yours at home.
Just be sure to check you travel via Heidelberg and not Leandra as that road is quite horrible.
Will DEFINITELY be back in Spring!

Our family had a fantastic long weekend at Sunbird Cottage and all wished we didn't need to leave this little piece of paradise. The cottage itself was very comfortable and well equipped and had breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. There is so much to do on the farm for young an old. We loved the kayaking, bass fishing, and walks, and the kids were so excited to help with collecting eggs and herding sheep! Thank you so much to Sylvie and Minou for being the most generous hosts and for taking the time to give our city children a real experience of farm life.

Sunbird House is the perfect place to get away from city life. It is well equipped with lots of space and has stunning views across the gorge. There is plenty to do on the farm - hiking, strolling, birding with Wakkerstroom close enough for a quick trip into town. Sylvie is extremely friendly and helpful and provided us with fresh greens from her garden, farm eggs and homemade jam - a real treat.

We had the perfect stay with our boys (aged 3 and 5). Sylvie is a superb host...she encouraged the boys to help collect eggs, herd the sheep, she took time to take us to the waterfall. Every day was filled with something new and her love for plants and seeds is addictive.
The cottage was well equipped and the attention to detail much appreciated - fresh milk, eggs and homemade jam. Definitely going to be back, thank you.

The linen, wine glasses, cutlery, bath goodies etc. etc. and care to extra detail was great.

Sunbird Cottage has a beautiful view of Majuba when the sun shines, and when it rains the mist rolls past, and you can snuggle up with a book close to the fire. It is the place to go to get away from it all. Thoughtful touches are everywhere in the cottage, from farm produce to firewood. From the stoep you look down a forested gorge, and farm animals graze in the fields nearby. After 4 nights, we were sad to leave, but we'll be back.

Were we in total awe when we arrived at one of the most beautiful scenic views in South Africa. Both the house and cottage overlook an emerald green gorge. The accommodation was spacious and inviting, we arrived to fresh eggs, milk and vegetables and immediately greeted by Luke, an adorable Golden Retriever. Sylvie and Minou are the best hostesses we have ever encountered on our journeys, genuinely friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and fun to be with. The kids enjoyed early morning marshmallows and hot chocolate with Sylvie every morning before feeding chickens, chicks, picking veggies and just enjoying themselves in the beautiful surrounds. Kayaking in the dam was fun filled and our trip to the forest breathtaking, we even spotted a Martial Eagle. Both the adults and young kids want to come back SOON! Thank you!

He was in his element. If you are looking for 5* facilities, then this is not it. If you are looking for a priceless experience, then you've found it! This is a place to unwind and recharge. What a pleasure to take our teenage boys out of town to experience farm life! We had a wonderful, relaxing family weekend away from the city's hustle and bustle. The house has lots of space and views of the gorge and farm. During daytime we've enjoyed various activities outside the house and at night we were stargazing and playing games in front of the fireplace. It was a treat to spend time with our seventeen year old boys who didn't even bother over any multimedia (cell phones and tablets). This place is a jewel. We will definitely be back!

This was a convenient stopover between Kruger Park and Durban and although we only stayed for 1 night, we would've happily stayed longer. The cottage is secluded and has a beautiful view. The attention to detail from bubble bath, tissues in every room, fresh milk, eggs and jam provided to the fireplace and electric blankets made it very comfortable and homely. It is very child friendly and our children enjoyed exploring the farm and feeding the lambs. We have stayed in many self catering venues and I would highly recommend Sunbird Cottage.

There is so much to rave about this tidy retreat. The accommodation is absolutely perfect, with amazing views onto the cliffs and rolling grasslands, and a bathtub where you can watch the birdlife right outside your window, a cosy fireplace and lovely braai area. If this wan't enough the eggs, fresh milk and jam included with the stay are an absolute delight! There is so much to do and see in the area in terms of nature, history and water related activities. The service is fantastic as Sylvie is always willing to help and provide recommendations, and the farm dogs are a delight and definitely make you fell safe!
