Welcome to Ferndene Farm, a little bit of peace and quiet in the Dargle Conservancy Area. We have lots of beautiful space and a very comfortable self-catering home, perfect for large groups of people and families. Or just anybody who wants to stretch out.
The 6 bedroom 1940’s dolerite stone and thatch farmhouse is settled snugly in the mist-belt forests of the Dargle. Come and relax in the rather expansive acre-large private gardens or use the house as a base for touring the Midlands Meander. Take a walk through the pristine natural forest or head off elsewhere for something to do.
We have a lovely large lounge with real Oregon pine floors, and big stone fire place featuring a wood-burning stove for those chilly Midlands winter nights. The dining room features a simply enormous table for eating at, which is also a billiards, pool and snooker table. The kitchen has a further 6-seater table for eating at and its own pantry and servery, so it’s perfect for large groups and families to congregate and cook in together. The old school verandah, which runs the length of the house, is now a series of open passages where you can sit and read or browse the photos of days gone by. Sit out or dine in the courtyard garden, or peruse the larger private gardens at your leisure.
We have 6 lovely bedrooms, 5 with an extra length queen bed and plenty of space. The master bedroom has a super-king bed and is simply enormous, with plenty of space for the luxuriating couple or a whole family. We have 3 single beds for children, and a travel cot for babies or toddlers. Each bedroom has electric blankets on the main beds, wardrobe space and a fan to cool you off in the summer.
The bedrooms share 3 bathrooms. The master bathroom is en-suite and contains a shower and bath. The big middle family bathroom has only a bath but plenty of space. The bathroom convenient to the living areas has a shower and a bath, plus a separate toilet.

Snug in the mist-belt forests of the Dargle, Ferndene is just the right distance of 15 minutes by car from the nearest little town of Howick. Close enough for comfort, far enough for solitude.
Ferndene Farm is part of the Dargle Conservancy Area, a non profit organisation that aims to conserve the beauty and biodiversity of the area for the benefit of present and future generations. We offer peace and serenity, ample green space and privacy; a country haven in the midst of the unparalleled natural beauty of the Dargle.
There is plenty to see, eat and do in the Midlands. Take a lazy walk through the pristine forests on Ferndene or visit the Karkloof Canopy Tours for something more energetic in the trees. Climb the Inhlosane Mountain from Everglades Hotel, or visit one of the local mountain bike tracks. Choose from golf, fishing or horse-riding. And if you fancy something a bit more relaxed, eat at one of the many local cafes or bistros, browse for antiques and arts or sample the locally produced food and wine. We have a full list of things to do or you can visit the Midlands Meander website.
