The small village of Ubombo lies in the Ubombo mountains that form the border between Swaziland and KwaZulu-Natal. It is just a short distance from the Pongolapoort Dam and from the Mkuze Game Reserve. Its proximity to the Swaziland border makes it an excellent place to spend the night before traveling through the border. Just a few kilometres to the East of Ubombo lies the Indian Ocean, and in particular the great St Lucia Marine Reserve and the Simangaliso Wetland Park. This mountainous region is a particularly beautiful part of South Africa. It is dotted with game reserves and scattered fields of sugar cane. Ubombo lies at the foot of the legendary Ghost Mountain, where chiefs of the Shangaan tribe were laid to rest. High on its slopes there is a taboo cave, used as a tomb by generations of the Gaza family. At irregular intervals over the years, strange lights and flickering fires are seen among the fissures and cliffs of the summit. Weird noises and strange calls are also heard.
