Sommerschield is a small up-market suburb of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. The suburb is located close to the city, banks, port, restaurants, embassies, beachfront and airport, and has beautiful views overlooking the bay and Islands. Sommerschied is the ideal suburb from which to explore the old colonial streets and avenues of Maputo. Stroll down the jacaranda lined avenues to the old part of town or along the Avenue Marginal that runs along the sea front. Maputo, which was badly run down during the civil war of the 70s and 80s has now been largely rebuilt, and is a safe and clean destination. Maputo is dotted with pavement cafés where the visitor can enjoy a relaxing coffee or a quiet drink while the rest of the world goes by. The station is an interesting place to visit - the domed roof being designed by Gustave Eiffel, who designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Maputo was designed in grid format during the Portuguese colonial times and it is easy for the first time visitor to find his way around. Maputo is an important port and one of the main export ports for South Africa and Zimbabwe.
