Fort Frederick

Fort Frederick

Fort Frederick was built in the late 18th century to support the British Occupation of the Cape. Algoa Bay was a valuable strategic location to set up a military post because it was the gateway to the Eastern Cape.

This occupation was challenged by both the white settlers of Graaff-Reinet and also by the Xhosa tribes who were migrating southward. To combat these threats General Vandeleur was sent to Algoa Bay along with 350 troops, including many Hottentot soldiers to defend the region.

The fort consists of four massive stone walls, each wall being 90 feet in length and 9 feet high. The fort is located on a hill with a commanding view across Algoa Bay. The powder magazine was built to protect up to one ton of gunpowder, which was used to power the eight twelve-pound cannons that made up the fort's heavy armament.

The occupation was short-lived. By 1803 the British signed a treaty which returned the territory to the Netherlands. But by 1806 Fort Frederick was re-armed by British troops in response to the threat of French expansion. But despite these tensions the fort was never involved in combat. Today is is on of the oldest buildings in the Eastern Cape and has been declared a national monument.
