The Drakensberg is a magnificent mountain range that defines the Lesotho-South Africa border. The Zulu name for these mountains is uKhahlamba - ""barrier of spears"", which is an appropriate name for impenetrable wall that has protected the Sotho people from Zulu and European armies for hundreds of years.
Much of the summit is over 3,000m a.s.l., with several peaks over 3,300m, including Thabana Ntlenyana, Giant's Castle, Njesuthi, and Champagne Castle. The park has dozens of well-maintained hiking trails that allow hikers and mountaineers to explore this vast wilderness.
Those wishing to ascend the Drakensberg by car may do so at the Sani Pass near the Underberg. Although it is possible to traverse road with a sedan, a 4x4 is highly recommended. If you wish to cross into Lesotho a valid passport is required.
